Adhesion Percolation Determines Global Deformation Behavior in Biomimetic Emulsions

چکیده
Characterizing the mechanical properties of tissues is key for understanding fundamental biological processes such as morphogenesis or tumor progression. In particular, intercellular adhesion forces, mediated by transmembrane proteins like cadherins, are expected to control topology and viscoelastic behavior under stress. order understand influence in tissues, we use biomimetic emulsions which droplets mimic cells adhere each other through specific bonds. Here, tune both binding energy adhesive inter-droplets contacts well fraction that adhesive, thereby defining a so-called adhesiveness. Our experimental results show prevents emergence local even at high packing fractions preventing energetically costly droplet rearrangements. By studying deformation within packings with different average adhesiveness values, reveal existence threshold value above all deformed ones irrespective their properties. We this critical coincides percolation structures throughout tissue. From point view, indicates only would be sufficient global tissue, during morphogenesis.

Biomimetic emulsions reveal the effect of mechanical forces on cell-cell adhesion.
Cell-cell contacts in tissues are continuously subject to mechanical forces due to homeostatic pressure and active cytoskeleton dynamics. In the process of cellular adhesion, the molecular pathways are well characterized but the role of mechanics is less well understood. To isolate the role of pressure we present a dense packing of functionalized emulsion droplets in which surface interactions ...
متن کاملTransition of Temporal Scaling Behavior in Percolation Assisted Shear-branching Structure during Plastic Deformation
This paper explores the temporal scaling behavior induced shear-branching structure in response to variant temperatures and strain rates during plastic deformation of Zr-based bulk metallic glass (BMG). The data analysis based on the compression tests suggests that there are two states of shear-branching structures: the fractal structure with a long-range order at an intermediate temperature of...
متن کاملPolymeric stabilized emulsions: steric effects and deformation in soft systems.
Polymeric stabilizers are used in a broad range of processes and products, from pharmaceuticals and engine lubricants to formulated foods and shampoos. In rigid particulate systems, the stabilization mechanism is attributed to the repulsive force that arises from the compression of the polymer coating or "steric brush" on the interacting particles. This mechanism has dictated polymer design and...
متن کاملGlobal Persistence in Directed Percolation
We consider a directed percolation process at its critical point. The probability that the deviation of the global order parameter with respect to its average has not changed its sign between 0 and t decays with t as a power law. In space dimensions d ≥ 4 the global persistence exponent θp that characterizes this decay is θp = 2 while for d < 4 its value is increased to first order in ε = 4 − d...

We propose a novel design of a biomimetic micro-structured surface, which exhibits controlled strongly direction-dependent adhesion properties. The micro-system consists of parallel elastic wall-like structures covered by a thin layer. Numerical calculations have been carried out to study the adhesive properties of the proposed system and to provide design criteria with the aim of obtaining opt...
